The 1st Philippine Graphic Design Awards sets the standard for Philippine design

PHILIPPINES OCTOBER 13, 2010 – It may only be first year of the Philippine Graphic Design Awards (PGDA), but it has plotted a positive direction for Filipino designers with the high standards set by its judges. At the awards night last Saturday held at The Tents, Alphaland Southgate Makati, eight C, M, Y and K awards–named after the four color printing inks cyan, magenta, yellow and key black–and 16 Merit awards were handed out to professionals and students alike.
 
PGDA’s panel of judges was made up of distinguished creatives from the design and brand communication community: AJ Dimarucot, Brandie Tan, Cynthia Arre, Dave Ferrer, Drew Europeo, Joel Limchoc, Jose Ticsay, Jowee Alviar, and Nico Puertollano.
 
The 18 categories are classified into student, professional and open divisions. The M Award (Magenta Trophy)for the top entry in the student category was given to Danika Rio T. Navarro for the "SELAH Redesigned Desk Study Bible", where she created icons for a stylized Bible. Navarro also received the runner-up trophy, the C Award, for "CREDO" in the Identity Category. Navarro will have the opportunity to intern at creative agencies including 27+20 Design Boutique, BBDO Guerrero, and Team Manila, among others.
 
Freelance illustrators Raizel Go and Ariadne "Wham" Bacabac won Merits for their Raw School poster designs for the seminars "The Importance of Fearlessness" and the "The 50 Boxes of Freakshow” .
 
The Y Award (Yellow Trophy) and K Award (Black Trophy) were handed out to the runners-up and top prizes for the professional and open divisions. The Y Award went to three creative agencies. McCann Worldgroup Philippines won twice: for the I am Ninoy/ I am Cory "Glasses" logo design and for the KISH "Furniture" optical illusion storefront displays. BBDO Guerrero/Proximity Philippines and Ideals Creatives received one Y Award each, for the "Magnifying Glass" and "Let’s Volt In!", respectively. BBDO Guerrero/Proximity also received the Merit for their DOT Business Cards and AHON Pop Up House.
 
But the night’s top awards went to Karl Fredrick M. Castro’s "Palaspas: An Appreciation of Palm Leaf Art in the Philippines" and Marco Rae Angeles’ "Ninja! Heads will roll!", which were both awarded the Black Trophy. Castro and Angeles also received Merits for their other submissions.
