Kodak sponsors Young Director Award at Cannes; deadline for entries April 30

Oh to be young and talented!  Ten years after the Young Director Award was established by the Commercial Film Producers of Europe (CFP-E), Kodak bestows its support of the CFP-E’s creative talents in commercial film production, yet again.

To be presented with this year’s Cannes Lions on June 24, the Young Director Award bestows on its winners exposure to the advertising industry’s network of around 10,000 key figures from 94 countries, largely through strategic promotional features in Shots magazine and via the Young Directors Award website.  On the material and logistics side, Kodak Color Negative Film will be supplied in support of the YDA winners’ next project.

The award is divided into European and non-European divisons, each offering first and second prizes, plus a Special Jury Award.

Aspiring directors must submit entries for one of the following: test commercials and broadcast, viral commercials and branded short films.  The student category is exclusive to film school students.  Deadline for entries is April 30 2009.

Expressing Kodak’s enthusiastic support of the Young Director Awards, Nicole Phillips, Segment Manager, Image Capture Commercials, Kodak Entertainment Imaging said, “Directors are very skilful in their ability to use subtle variations in colors and contrasts to create moods and textures to support their stories and evoke emotional responses, nuances in the visual content need to be experienced by the viewer because the images are the heart of the story. The CFP-E competition is one way we can recognize excellence in this demanding and sharply competitive art form.”

Kodak’s vision for the Young Director Award is to promote young creative talent in commercial film production from anywhere in the world.”  Global advertising bigwigs congregate at the Cannes Festival annually to view the best in international advertising and creativity.

Kodak is at the heart of Cannes Lions, along with other such festivals, every year to be available, visible and helpful to filmmakers, especially at the onset of promising careers.  “Commercials push the boundaries of visual storytelling. So many aspire to shoot film because nothing else enables them to tell their stories without compromise- and we want to help them do that,” adds Philips.
