‘Be, do, have’ is Jim Paredes’ formula for creativity

MANILA, OCTOBER 26, 2012 – Jim Paredes will never write “the last Jim Paredes song”.

“No! I’m gonna die with my boots on!” Never running out of passion for music and writing, Paredes told young admen and adwomen at Raw School that he’ll never retire.

He’s had 41 years’ worth of experience as a creative to share, and yet when he talked about inspirations, achievements and gave pieces of advice, you would not sense a hint of self-glorification – only a continuing hunger for creative inspiration.

Be a creative, do the work of a creative and then have your showcase. That’s his formula. “Practicality is the second thing you consider. The first thing you consider is what you really want.”

Paredes, a third of the iconic OPM group Apo Hiking Society, shared two simple rules of creativity:
1. “Show up.”
2. “Just do it. And do it seriously.”

You don’t break the world’s records by showing up [only] when you’re inspired, he says. Unlock creativity all the time.

So where does this award-winning musician get his inspiration? “As a creative you don’t think it’s coming from your head. Creativity becomes hard work when you think like that. It doesn’t work like that. Creativity is already out there.”
