THE PHILIPPINES, DECEMBER 2011: Despite the continuous growth of mobile and digital media, television still plays a major role in the lives of Filipinos, whether through news, entertainment, or advertising and marketing. Wide accessibility and relative affordability make TV a highly influential medium, especially among children.
Acknowledging this fact, the Southeast Asian Foundation for Children and Television (SEAFCTV) conceptualized an award that duly recognizes TV programs and personalities that are admired, respected, and worthy to be emulated by children. The first-ever Anak TV Seal Awards were given in 1996, and has since served as proof of child-friendly and child-sensitive programming.
The “big three” TV networks all received their share of Anak TV Seal Awards for 2011, but ABS-CBN and GMA 7 programs and personalities were the ones that landed spots in the Top 10 across all categories. Five individuals, four of whom are broadcasters, were also elevated to the Makabata Hall of Fame.
The two-tiered judging process happens from February to October of the current awards year. Entries are judged based on moral slant, artistic merit, educational content, and cultural relevance among others. The Anak TV Seal Awards jury is composed of representatives from different sectors who are also considered stake-holders of TV programming – parents, educators, business and media people, government, media, non-government organizations, the religious sector and the youth.
