Ateneo sweeps major trophies in the Philippine Graphic Design Awards 2011

THE PHILIPPINES, NOVEMBER 2011: It was girl power all over in the recently concluded Philippine Graphic Design Awards 2011, with three students from the Ateneo de Manila University sweeping all three Magenta trophies, the major award in the Student Category. Conversely, no Black Trophy, the top award for professionals, were handed out this year.

Receiving laurels for their creative works are Ma. Therese Lansangan with “DIY or Die”, Nicole Ernestine Severino with “Drumocracy”, and Analyn Yap for “Barangay Bahagi: Photojournalism for the Masses”.

Lansangan has dubbed her creation as an “interactive book of design”, which collated works of various people asked to express themselves using a whit t-shirt as a canvas. “Drumocracy” is a visual system for learning how to play the drums, with an original color-coded beat method. Meanwhile, Yap’s work went down the social responsibility path as it provided an online venue for residents of Barangay Bungad, Quezon City to report issues and concerns to their local government unit or to inform their fellow residents.

While this year’s PGDA had fewer entries than last year, more quality works have been submitted, said Rico Sta. Maria, one of the ten judges for the competition. “Also, the judges are a lot more stern this year,” he added.

The panel of judges is composed of artists Sta. Cruz, Dan Matutina, AJ Dimarucot, Drew Europeo, Ivan Despi, husband and wife Nico and Katwo Puertollano, BBDO Guerrero’s Brandie Tan, Publicis Manila’s JP Cuison, and Lowe Philippines’ Leigh Reyes, who also served as the jury head.

The trophies for the PGDA are color-coordinated using the CMYK color model – cyan and magenta, and yellow and black for the minor and major awards for the students and professionals, respectively. White awards were also handed out for special citations.

BBDO Guerrero took home three yellow and two white trophies, while Rain Creative Lab Inc. brought back three white trophies, to dominate the professional category. McCann Worldgroup Philippines also received their share of awards with two special citations.

This year, PGDA also gave a special red trophy, the adobo magazine People’s Choice Award, for the entry with the most number of votes held through online polling. Meneer Marcelo’s “Dangeorus Minds”, depicting caricatures of popular characters in show business who “we love to hate”, received 2,316 votes and won over the competition. Marcelo’s work also received a Yellow Award.

The PGDA Awards 2011 was held last November 5 at the Decagon in Silver City, Pasig.
