Manila Envelope 4 rounds up ‘The Best Contemporary Filipino Novelists’

MANILA, MAY 15, 2013 – Literary and art magazine Manila Envelope in April launched an anthology entitled The Best Contemporary Filipino Novelists, showcasing a treasure trove of literature from great Filipino writers who are making a mark in and out the country.

Produced by the editor-publisher tag team of columnist Jessica Zafra and adman David Guerrero, Volume 4 features excerpts from works of 13 Filipino writers from around the world. This includes pieces from Dean Francis Alfar, Gina Apostol, F.H. Batacan,  Vicente Garcia Groyon, Angelo R. Lacuesta, Sabina Murray, Bino A. Realuyo, Brian Aascalon Roley, Lakambini Sitoy, Miguel Syjuco, Katrina Tuvera, R. Zamora Linmark, and Zafra.

The anthology, three-and-a-half years in the making, was supposed to be titled Best Young Novelists but in her famed blog JessicarulestheUniverse, Zafra quipped that a more accurate title would be "Filipino novelists under 50 writing in English whose works we are familiar with and like”.  Yodel Pe is the designer, with illustrations by Rizza Garcia and Rachel Teotico.

The book is set to hit bookstores in a few weeks with a special edition which will retail at P799.

Earlier in April, a piece from Syjiuco included in the journal was involved in a copyright row between the author, the publisher and lifestyle magazine Rogue. It was resolved that the article no longer appears in the magazine’s literature issue (May 2013).
