MANILA, MARCH 4, 2013 – Norkis Philippines donated 200 new “environmentally-friendly” motorcycles, worth P9 million, to the Philippine National Police, which will enhance police visibility in remote areas.
The two-stroke motorcycles are retrofitted with Hydroplus System, advanced hydrogen fuel blending technology for motorized vehicles to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emission levels. The technology was developed by H2O Technologies in the Philippines.
Norkis Philippines president Luis Quisumbing said that he was happy with the results of the emission tests of the motorcycles after installation of Hydroplus which showed the “remarkable difference between those with and without Hydroplus. From levels over three times higher, Hydroplus brought down emissions to levels not only well within the prescribed standards in the Clean Air Act, but definitely way below those marks.”
According to the Clean Air Act of the Philippines, two-stroke motorcycles can be registered if it passes the strict emission standards, which are set at 4500 ppm for Hydro Carbons and 3.5 percent per volume for Carbon Monoxide. The emission levels of standard two-stroke motorcycles are usually greater than these set standards, which is the primary reason for its ban in the US in 1985. With the Hydroplus installed, the vehicles’ emission levels were reduced by as much as 80.
The motorcycles, according to director Lina Sarmiento of the directorate for police community relations, would be deployed to municipal and provincial police stations identified by the Directorate for Logistics. But they would be particularly useful in mountainous and far-flung areas, Sarmiento added.
