Twitter down for the count

GLOBAL – JULY 27, 2012: Twitter has emerged as an early casualty of the unprecedented surge in tweets by sports fans following the 2012 London Olympics, which is expected to be one of the most socially connected Games ever.

The micro blogging site reported access problems across the world on Thursday just a day before the Games begins at 8.30pm Friday London time.
Sluggish response and outright outages were reported by users in North America, Europe, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa.
Service has since been restored in parts of the US and Asia but problems continue in the remaining markets.
The recent European Championship provided an indication of the expected social media frenzy related to the Olympics – 15,000 tweets were fired per second during the final tournament.
