This weekend: walk a mile, feed a child

With food commercials going strong even during tough times, it’s easy to forget that about 3 million Filipino children under five years old suffer from malnutrition. So if it takes a celebrity endorsement to get consumers to take action, so be it.

Young star KC Concepcion is the special envoy of the UN World Food Program (UN WFP). Due to schedule conflicts, she will not be at this weekend’s fundraising walk, End Hunger, Walk the World. The walk is being held almost simultaneously by UN WFP offices in countries, with the Manila leg set along Roxas Boulevard.

Participants will walk a mile for donations of P150 each – enough to feed ten children for a day, according to the WFP’s calculation of PhP15.00 for three full meals per child. Last year’s walk drew 3,500 participants, which the organizers hope to grow significantly this year. The program has recently increased efforts in the Philippines, specifically in Mindanao’s conflict zones, where Concepcion has visited.
