Jetstar launches world’s first flying book exchange

SINGAPORE – To rekindle the Singaporeans love for reading, Jetstar and the National Reading Movement have partnered to launch the world’s highest book club–Jetstar’s Big Book Swap. The campaign aims to encourage customers to read during while on board the plane and for the duration of their holiday.

A survey of over 3,900 Singaporeans* showed that reading was not a priority for most people. 55% of the respondents read less than five times a year, with 42% stating that the primary reason for not picking up a book was due to a lack of spare time. Despite holidays being a time for people to unwind and relax, only 7% usually read while on vacation.

“Books are an increasingly forgotten form of in-flight entertainment that can transport one to an imaginary adventure even before the flight departs, Ms Chantal van Wijnbergen, Jetstar Regional Marketing Manager SEA, said.

“Likewise, a holiday can be greatly enhanced with a good read, and we hope the books from our kind sponsors, including NLB, can reinvigorate our passengers’ passion for reading, and have the book swap flourish into the world’s first flying, community-driven book club.”

To bring this to life, the Jetstar Big Book Swap will make books readily accessible to passengers at no cost, kick-starting a book exchange movement in the air.

On July 30th, Singapore’s inaugural National Reading Day, over 500 books and bestselling titles donated by the National Library Board (NLB), MPH Bookstores, Select Books, Book Point and Write Editions will be distributed to passengers at the boarding gates of selected Jetstar flights at Changi Airport Terminal 1.

Passengers are invited to enjoy their book inflight and on holiday, and simply return it to the seat pocket during their return Jetstar flight for the next passenger en-route to their holiday destination. Passengers wanting to contribute their own books to the flying book club can also get a Book Swap sticker from the Jetstar crew.

“We are very happy to have the support of partners like Jetstar Asia for the National Reading Movement. Jetstar Asia’s efforts will help bring the fun in reading to greater heights. We would like to take this opportunity to invite others who are passionate about encouraging reading in Singapore to join us. No effort is too small. I hope that everyone can pledge to read, and make a personal effort to Read More, Read Widely and Read Together,” said Mrs Elaine Ng, CEO of National Library Board.

Jetstar’s Big Book Swap will be available on all Jetstar Asia flights from 30 July to 31 August 2016.
