The Nobel Committee awards the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize to United States President Barack Obama.

Obama’s presidential campaign already won major international advertising awards including the Cannes Lions Grand Prix. Now, he’s being awarded for his extraordinary diplomacy that bridges cross-cultures.

"His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world’s population,"  the five-member Committee added.

The US President bested 205 nominations that include Zimbabwe Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, Colombian Sentaor Piedad Cordoba and Chinese dissident Hu Jia, as well as French-Colombian politican Ingrid Betancourt and Afghan women’s rights activist Simi Samar.

The award brings with it a gold medal, a diploma and the equivalent of US$1.4million.
