Google PH launches “Love your Language” to sharpen Filipino-Cebuano translations

MANILA – Google Philippines launched its first “translate-a-thon” to fine-tune Google Translate as part of the Buwan ng Wika celebration this August.

Google Translate is a sought-after tool doing over a billion translations every day, with 92% of it coming from outside the US. However, the algorithm or “brain” behind it is not 100% accurate but can get smarter as it receives more input and correction.

Volunteers have been tweaking the tool since June 2014 with the Google Translate Community. This month, the tech giant is inviting more Filipinos to contribute through the Love Your Language campaign.

The goal is to improve the translation of Filipino and Cebuano languages online by letting Filipinos either translate or validate phrases and words, sharpening Google Translate in the process.

Filipinos need not be in the Philippine to participate and can be done at their own leisure. Google Philippines clarified that Love Your Language is not a contest but will recognize top contributors by the end of August. To be counted, users must register in the Google Translate Community using a Gmail account.

Google Philippines will have a roadshow for Love Your Language for the rest of the month, stopping in community-led and campus-led events in 11 locations. Here’s the complete list.
