42nd International Advertising Association World Congress opens to “Back to Basics – put the consumer at the heart” theme

Moscow — Igor Shuvalov, 1st Vice Prime-Minister and Yuri Luzhkov, Mayor Moscow, opened the 42nd International Advertising Association (IAA) World Congress last May 12, 2010, welcoming over 1,200 delegates from over 45 countries. In his opening remarks, Alan Rutherford, the newly elected IAA Chairman and World President, called on the advertising industry to “go back to basics and put the consumer at its heart”. This call echoes that of Marc Pritchard of P&G who suggested that advertisers “focus away from marketing to consumers but serving them”.

Alan Rutherford, in his opening remarks, called upon the industry (advertisers, agencies and media owners) to “work hard in order to restore consumers’ trust so that they can establish long-lasting relationships”. Furthermore, he stated that “The future investment in talent was critical for the industry to thrive and declared that the IAA would take a thought leadership role in this area”.

The IAA World Congress convened from May 12-14, 2010 with newly elected officers to the IAA Board of Directors. Andrew McLean, GroupM, was elected to Senior Vice-President; Pheroza Bilimoria, Business India Publications, Ltd.; and Sandy Kornberg, Global Advertising Strategies named Senior VP, Secretary and Treasurer, respectively. The elections follow the succession of Alan Rutherford to IAA Chairman and World President.
