The French Women’s National Team promotes breast cancer awareness during La Marseillaise

PARIS, FRANCE – On the occasion of the France–Germany match, the players of the French Women’s National Football Team, supported by Orange, a major partner of the French Football Federation, made a symbolic gesture during La Marseillaise: placing their hand between the chest and the armpit.

A simple yet essential gesture—that of self-examination—which can help detect breast cancer at an early stage. This unprecedented action aims to reach and raise awareness among millions of spectators and viewers, reminding everyone that early detection saves lives.

A major public health issue

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women: one in eight women will be affected during her lifetime (INCa), and some studies suggest that it increasingly affects women under the age of 50. Each year in France, nearly 60,000 new cases are diagnosed, and around 12,000 deaths are linked to this disease (Santé Publique France).

When detected early, breast cancer can be cured in 90% of cases. Yet, despite these figures, self-check practices remain too little known and too rarely performed.

Self-examination gestures to do once a month

  • Observe your breasts: look for any visible abnormalities.
  • Check your breast and armpit up to the collarbone: detect any lump or hardening.
  • Use three fingers to feel the entire breast in small circular motions.
  • Gently press the nipple: make sure there is no discharge.

An unprecedented awareness initiative supported by renowned ambassadors

This live message delivered during the national anthem is part of a broader awareness campaign launched by Orange alongside the French Football Federation.

A video released ahead of the event features several iconic players from the French Women’s National Team, demonstrating the proper techniques for breast self-examination. Influential voices including Marine Lorphelin, doctor and well-known advocate for women’s health, as well as ambassadors from the Team Orange Football program, are also helping to spread the message on social media.

Finally, the initiative is further amplified by match commentators, who are invited to explain the significance and importance of this gesture to millions of viewers.

A meaningful commitment from Orange

As a company committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion, Orange continues to support women both on the sports field and in their everyday lives. Through this initiative, Orange and the French Football Federation highlight the importance of prevention and remind everyone that it’s a shared responsibility.

This initiative was also made possible thanks to the expertise of the Ligue contre le cancer, which supported the teams in ensuring the accuracy of the self-examination techniques and self-check advice shared.
