Which one, which one? Spikes Asia Advertising Festival draws near and the Creative Guild has mounted the Search for Young Spikes Team Philippines. The winning tandem goes to Singapore this September 16 to 18 to compete against the best of the young creatives in Asia.
For two days, August 19 and 20, fifteen teams from thirteen agencies will pit creative wit, cunning design, and unadulterated guts to muster the strength to emerge the Singapore-bound pair. In competition are young creatives from Ace-Saatchi & Saatchi, Bates 141, Blackpencil, BBDO Guerrero, Creative Juice, DDB Philippines, DentsuINDIO, DM9 JaymeSyfu, JWT Manila, Leo Burnett, McCann Worldgroup, Publicis JimenezBasic and TBWASantiago Mangada Puno. Agencies Ace-Saatchi & Saatchi and Publicis JimenezBasic fielded two teams each. (Complete list of teams below.) Noticeably missing were representatives from Y&R, Lowe, Campaigns & Grey, Ogilvy & Mather, Draft FCB, JRomero and Harrison Communications.
To inspire the young creatives, speakers from leading agencies and industry affiliates will be spread across the two-day seminar. To address the delegate are Teeny Gonzales-DDB, Raul Castro-McCann, Melvin Mangada-TBWASMP, Carlos Celdran, Team Manila and David Guerrero-BBDO Guerrero.
“The challenge to the young creatives is to reposition and relaunch the Philippines. To answer the question: If the Philippines were a brand, how do you turn around the negative image that is always highlighted,” revealed Eugene Demata, Competition Chairman and DM9 JaymeSyfu creative director. The brief is based on the speakers’ messages according to Demata.
To create one, integrated, multi-media campaign is not that different, or that difficult. However, to further test acuity of the combatants, all teams are required to do something that was not possible five years ago, “to use fresh, unique technology not available then,” added Demata.
Spikes Asia Advertising Festival ’09 at the Suntec City in Singapore is a debut event in the region. Although Spikes in itself is not brand new, its presence in the region is a welcome first because Pacific entries are not included. “Spikes is an old award, but it was dominated by Australia and New Zealand. This year, it is all Asia. The Philippines has always been on the radar, but never really noticed. This time, the Philippines is the country to watch,” says an enthusiastic Demata.
