UniDog, BBDO and Proximity Thailand team up to raise awareness on dog meat trade

ASIA-PACIFIC, THAILAND – September 23, 2013  – UniDog has partnered with BBDO and Proximity Thailand in the campaign "Beg for LIfe," which aims to raise awareness on dog killings for meat production.

According to the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), some 25 million dogs are killed for food every year. "Commercial dog meat production is inherently cruel," BBDO Thailand said in a press release. They noted that the animals suffer at every stage, from farming to transport, sales and slaughter.

The "Beg for Life" campaign spreads the message: "25 million dogs are killed for food each year. Help save them from the dog meat trade." This message is included in a series of ads by BBDO and Proximity Thailand, which feature dogs with their heads in a bowl, saying "I’m begging for life, not food."

"Dog has been man’s companion throughout history. Dog’s intelligence and compassion are closely linked to the well-being of their masters. They are not food on the table," they said.

Despite this, dog meat trade has flourished in some parts of Asia, including Thailand. Peter Shadbolt reported on CNN that animal rights activists estimate every year, 200,000 live dogs are smuggled from northeast Thailand to Vietnam, where a brutal death awaits them.

According to Soi Dog Foundation, the dogs that die from suffocation during transport are lucky, as those that survive the journey are tortured, then skinned alive. "The reason for this is that people believe that the pain inflicted leads to the tenderizing of the meat," the foundation said on its website.

UniDog Thailand aims to be the primary channel for the “Beg for Life” campaign, which is intended to put an end to the trading and eating of dog meat.
