KakaoTalk invades Philippines

MANILA, AUGUST 12, 2013 – Korea’s largest mobile messaging application KakaoTalk launched in the Philippines yesterday with a TV campaign featuring the country’s pop princess Sarah Geronimo and Korean boy band Big Bang.

KakaoTalk is represented in the Philippines by PR agency FleishmanHillard, in charge of the digital strategy.

The app offers users free personal or group instant messaging and voice calls. It has a wide range of content and services including ’KakaoPages’ for users to sell his or her own content. There are also games to choose from and a ’Plus Friend‘ special feature to receive updates from famous personalities. “KakaoTalk users can add the brand as a friend in their KakaoTalk and you can send out different benefits like coupons and free ts,” said Sonia Im, PR manager of Kakao Corporation.

It is the first mobile messaging app that has an ’Item Store‘ which offers animated emoticons, and Schedule feature for users to manage their meet-ups.

Advertisers can also take advantage of the user base. “If an organization really wants an application to provide their information and introduce their products, it kind of needs to have maintenance and a lot of money. But if you already have the KakaoTalk, you already build communities and you can also create a mobile application in ‘Plus Friend’ advertisements,” said Noah Hwang, marketing manager of Kakao Philippines.

KakaoTalk has won over more than 650 brands and more than 100 million KakaoTalk users in the last three years. It is now present in 230 countries, servicing 13 different languages. The mobile app is available on the iOS, Android, Blackberry, Windows, Bada and PC.
