Book It: The Embassy of Spain’s April cultural calendar is one for the books

The Embassy of Spain, through the Instituto Cervantes and its Cultural and Education Offices, unveils it cultural calendar for April, featuring a lineup of film screening, master class in cello, exhibits and literary events in celebration of the International Book Day.

As part of an extended celebration of women’s empowerment, the film Soy Nevenka will be screened on April 6 at 2:00 p.m. at the Conference Hall of the Center for Women’s and Gender Studies in the University of the Philippines Diliman.

Suzana Stephanovic, principal cellist of the Spanish Radio Television (RTVE) Orchestra, will offer a master class to students of the UST Conservatory of Music on April 8. A native of Belgrade, she has devoted a great deal of time to teaching and is regularly invited to prepare the cello sections of youth orchestras across Spain, as well as philharmonic ensembles in Ireland and Croatia.

April will not be complete without the commemoration of Día del Libro, which will be packed with activities on April 25, from poetry reading to story-telling sessions, free Spanish language classes, music or Spanish gastronomy, just to name a few. Aside from the legendary mainstays like Escribe el Quijote (Write Don Quijote) and book signings, this year the Spanish collective Atrapavientos, specialists in children´s literature, will offer a workshop on creative writing to local pupils.

Regarding art, pedestrians traversing the Ayala-Greenbelt underpass can still enjoy the exhibit Sorolla: A Walk through the Light, featuring life-size reproductions of some of the works of Spanish painter Joaquín Sorolla (1863–1923), known as the “Master of Light”.

The art group Boa Mistura has left its enduring mark in the country for everyone to see, using as its canvasses a basketball court in Tejeros,

Makati, colored with the word UNYON, and a wall in Fort Santiago embellished with TAGPUAN.

Art enthusiats have until June 14 to visit and be amazed by the exhibition Mezcla: Interwoven Cultures and the Mantón de Manila at the Ayala Museum. At the Centro de Turismo in Intramuros, one can also view anytime Four Centuries of Spanish Engineering Overseas, a permanent exposition showcasing Spain´s legacy in the said field.

Perhaps unbeknown to many, the Embassy of Spain also organizes events outside Manila. A must-see at the National Museum in Cebu is the exhibition Classics of Philippine Cartography from the 16th to the 20th Centuries, which runs until June 30.
