Wednesdat, August 9, at the 13th Cinemalaya Film Festival presents five full-lengths and one set of short features in the Main Competition, one Digital Classics featured film, two indie films for Indie Nation, a tribute to actress Lolita Rodriguez, a Best of the Festivals entry film, and a Retrospective on last year’s entries.
Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (Main Theater) offers “Ang Guro Kong Di Marunong Magbasa (My Teacher Who Doesn’t Know How To Read) by Perry Escaño at 3:30p.m., “Kiko Boksingero” by Thop Nazareno at 6:15p.m., and “Respeto” by Alberto Monteras II at 9p.m.
Shorts A, composed of “Fatima Marie Torres and the Invasion of Space Shuttle Pinas 25” by Carlo Francisco Manatad, “Sorry For The Inconvenience” by Carl Adrian Chavez, “Lola Loleng” by Jean Cheryl Tagyamon, “Aliens Ata” by Glenn Barit, “Islabodan” by Juan Carlo Tarobal, and “Manong ng Pa-aling” by E del Mundo, will be shown at 3:30p.m., at the Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino (Little Theater).
It will be followed by MMFF’s “Sunday Beauty Queen” by Babyruth Villarama at 6:15p.m., and Indie Nation featured film “Oro,” directed by Alvin Yapan at 9p.m. The MMFF film entry shows the plight of Filipino domestic helpers in Hong Kong, who work in relative anonymity and for near slave wages. In a beauty pageant, five helpers give themselves makeovers for a day and gleefully reclaim their dignity.
Main Competition entries “Nabubulok (The Decaying)” by Sonny Calvento and “Bagahe (The Baggage)” by Zig Dulay will have a back-to-back screening at the Tanghalang Huseng Batute (Studio Theater) at 6:15p.m. and 9p.m., respectively.
Also showing at Tanghalang Huseng Batute are Digital Classics’ “Kasal” by Laurice Guillen at 12:45p.m., followed by Indie Nation’s “Vince & Kath & James” by Theodore Bohorol at 3:30p.m. In “Kasal,” a young couple who are about to get married are forced to put closure to their past; while “Vince & Kath & James” is a romantic comedy that sets love struck teens onto a maze-like course of responding to the truest feelings of love and affection sent across text messages.
The 13th Cinemalaya looks back to the success of last year’s film festival with a Retrospective. Catch the 2016 Short Feature – “Pektus” by Isabel Quesada, “Ang Maangas, Ang Marikit at Ang Makata” by Jose Ibarra Guballa, “Forever Natin” by Cyrus Valdez and “Fish Out of Water” by Mon Garilao at 3:30p.m. at Tanghalang Manuel Conde (Dream Theater). Don’t miss “Tuos,” last year’s full length entry by Roderick Cabrido, at 9p.m., also at Tanghalang Manuel Conde.
There will be a tribute to actress Lolita Rodriguez, featuring “Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang,” directed by award-winning director Lino Brocka, at 6:15p.m.
Cinemalaya Campus culminates today with sessions tackling topics on editing (Cutting To Make Something Whole), production meaning (Mise-en-scene and Meaning) and film audience (Ano’ng Tinging Mo? Reaching Spectator). The campus will happen from 8a.m. until 2:15p.m. at the Little Theater lobby.
