The Philippines Gird for the Cannes Hunt

This June, thousands of the world’s wildest thinkers are expected to roam the famed beach of Cannes at the South of France, as the most-awaited 55th Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival draws near.  Slated for June 15 to 21, the week-long festival welcomes more than 9,000 delegates annually for an enriching and empowering experience.  No less than global creative leaders will preside over workshops on media, production, content and creative.

Investing in Our Future

After JWT Manila’s Gold Lion for the impressive radio ad for Lotus Spa, Manila is expected to stand tall in this year’s festival.  But in the Young Lions’ den, will our the PDI Young Lions survive?  The all-Filipino agency J Romero & Associates believes that Gigay Qipanes and JB Bangoy have what it takes to do battle with the world’s youngest brilliant hopefuls.
Our young creatives nearly missed the call of the hunt, as neither Adboard and 4As-P was willing to sponsor their trip.  Lady Luck came in the person of Philippine Daily Inquirer’s president, Sandy Prieto-Romualdez.  She generously offered to fly the Young Creatives to Cannes, proof of the publication’s unwavering commitment to champion the Filipino youth. Hence, the cubs’ new name of PDI Young Lions.
Pepito Olarte attests, “Our president believes that for the advertising industry to prosper, development of young creative talents should be prioritized.  She recognizes that the young creatives are the future of this industry.  The global learnings and exposure of these young creatives in Cannes will surely widen their horizons.  This is the same reason why Philippine Daily Inquirer sponsors youth development projects like the Integrated Marketing Communications competition of PANA, PMA and other organizations.”
Our cubs have more to win than the coveted Young Lions.  One week of basking in Cannes’ sunny shores, in the company of no less than the world’s most brilliant minds is simply priceless.  After all, the Cannes Advertising Festival is THE show that every creative dreams of.

She reports to Mark Gross of DDB Chicago in the Radio Lions. Reyes  follows in the footsteps of McCann Worldgroup’s Emily Abrera and BBDO Guerrero Ortega’s David Guerrero, who were also judges (and in Guerrero’s case, also Jury president) in the Radio Lions.

Reyes first gained the Cannes Lions organizers attention when she won several awards for the Soroptomist print and outdoor campaign.

Welcome The Newest Lions

Design Lions makes its debut this year.  Another noteworthy change for this year is the qualification of other films—made for the Internet, mobiles and other screens like digital outdoor solutions and branded content on TV—to compete for the Film Lions. Two other categories to be launched this year are Integrated Film (those adapted for three or more screens) and Interactive film (ads for any product or service that uses interactive film).

MARK TUSSEL
– Jury President
Mark Tussel, chief creative officer of Leo Burnett Worldwide, chairs the Titanium and Integrated Lions Jury.  Even with 94 global offices under him, Mark manages to retain his award-winning status.  Manes in his cap are the Cannes Grand Prix for Mercedes Benz “Skidmarks” and several Gold Cannes Lions.  And the network even took home a Titanium Lion last year.

On Titanium and Integrated Lions: “This category is an incubator for ideas.  Ideas that are unique, new and pure that they cannot be labeled in a conventional way.  It awards ideas that have found a higher level of integration and category-defying work that pushes the industry forward.  In short, these are the most precious and prestigious Lions to win.”
