adobo Design Awards 2015 calls for ‘Design for the Future’

MANILA – As adobo magazine continues on its mission to celebrate creativity with the 2015 adobo Design Awards, the open category theme “Design for the Future” calls for design ideas that are simple, creative solutions to social issues.

Open to students, professionals, and freelancers, the category is open to designs that are socially relevant, environmentally friendly, sustainable, use locally-sourced materials and reflect Filipino sensibilities.

No longer are design and functionality two separate things. More and more, the two go hand-in-hand. Design for the future is not just clever, but socially relevant. When designing for the future, think repurposed materials, upcycling, and an entirely new way of solving old problems. Design for the future thinks about health, energy, the environment, and of course, people.

Some inspiring examples include DM9JaymeSyfu’s Smart ‘TXTBKS’, which turns old phones and unused SIM cards into educational materials; Y&R Philippines and Maynilad’s ‘Dengue Bottle’, a do-it-yourself mosquito trap;‘Rags2Riches’, a social enterprise which creates eco-ethical fashion and home accessories out of up cycled scrap cloth; and MyShelter Foundation’s ‘A Liter of Light’, which turns plastic bottles into makeshift solar lamps.

Designs don’t need to be extravagant or over-the-top. In many cases, simplicity is key. Simple solutions can be just as important – and great designs for the future will make people think, “Why didn’t I think of that?”

Submissions under this category can be any of the following: packaging, wearable, environmental. furniture, etc.

Entries must be new work, and must be submitted with a concept board and a mock-up design or sample. Works may be submitted individually, or in a group of up to four four members. Design professionals and freelancers entering new work will be judged separately.
