adobo FOI 2019: Wunderman Thompson Philippines, Acid House, Hit Productions Collaborate to Create Stunning Visuals for the adobo Festival of Ideas 2019

MANILA, PHILIPPINES – In the spirit of collaboration, three four different entities came together to create a stunning visual that fully encapsulates what “The Connectivity Economy” is all about.

At this year’s adobo Festival of Ideas, seventeen different Agents of Innovation came on stage to dissect a new organism called The Connectivity Economy which demonstrates how collaboration over competition drives innovation, and how “connecting” different sectors that were once fragmented results in unexpected but effective solutions.

For the one-day conference, fifteen different sectors were explored and connected, namely Data & Technology, Sustainability, Education, Entertainment, Infrastructure, Food, Business, Science, Health, People, Mobile, Makers, Arts & Culture, Sound, and Media & Communications. Each of these sectors were represented by 2D icons crafted by creatives from Wunderman Thompson Philippines, who aided the adobo team in coming up with over all look for this year’s festival.

“Inspired by mathematical equations, we came up with the design concept of endless probability. It felt like an incredibly vast idea so it needed a design language to make it tangible and grounded. We created an icon to represent each industry, and pin down an illustration style that can live on its own. The icons needed to be simple, recognizable, but still playful. The icons were rendered flat like material design at the initial stage, and became even more exciting with the 3D rendition with the help of Ivan Despi from Acid House,” shared Villarica Manuel, Art Director for Wunderman Thompson Philippines.

 

The video begins with two icons — one for Science, one for Data & Technology, separated within their own clusters. One Science icon gets propelled out of the field and into Data & Technology, where he is prodded before other Data & Tech icons join him and create an all new visual. As the field continues switch and evolve, the video shifts to a 3D look as more sectors are introduced and more amalgamations are created. The video ends with the final key visual for the festival, and is a demonstration of the amazing things that can be produced with things come together, connect, and collaborate.

Setting the mood is a perfectly synced track created by Hit Productions. VP for Creative Brian Cua shared, “We were tasked to design a sound for each of the icons representing each sector or industry. For example – a cosmic bleep for science, a water sound for sustainability, a metal sound for infrastructure, and so on. Since the concept is economies forming when these sectors collaborate and connect, the corresponding sounds should combine and build into a cohesive symphony of sounds and effects. The challenge was working with toneless sounds and noises, making them distinct and not end up in a sonic mush. To address this, most of the sounds are sampled and triggered like a percussive instrument and processed with stutter and scratch effects. It was a delicate balance on what’s going on onscreen and hearing the appropriate combination of sounds.”

Acid House and Wunderman Thompson also helped the adobo Festival of Ideas come up with two AR filters — one for selfies and the other, an art installation you can only see through your phone.
