BBDO Guerrero and Philippine Airlines‘ “Safetynovela” is officially a MAD STARS Grand Prix-winning campaign. The Philippine Flag carrier’s most recent viral safety video won the Grand Prix in the Branded Entertainment category.

BBDO Guerrero Creative Chairman David Guerrero and BBDO Guerrero Group Creative Director Nikki Sunga accepted the award in Busan, South Korea at MAD STARS 2026.

The campaign, SafetynovelaCare That Comes From The Heart, reimagines traditional aviation safety by leaning into the high-stakes drama and iconic narrative of Filipino telenovelas.

While the video covers all the standard safety protocols, it does so with a creative twist: the instructions are delivered within the setting of a traditional Filipino home, a church, and a beach. Complete with overdramatized dialogue and relatable characters, the video feels less like a lecture and more like a scene from a beloved television series.

In an exclusive interview with adobo MagazineCreative Directors Mica Dela Rosa (Copy) and Caleb Cosico (Art) shared insights into the campaign’s success.

Operating within the aviation industry’s strict safety framework, Safetynovela was made possible through close collaboration among the client, the agency, and the production house.

Philippine Airlines stipulated a clear objective in the brief it sent to BBDO Guerrero: execute a creative concept that would immediately capture passengers’ attention and encourage them to watch the video in its entirety.

Bearing in mind that the campaign would function as a safety tool, BBDO Guerrero’s team subsequently crafted a narrative that seamlessly follows the sequence of guidelines set by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) while incorporating classic Filipino television narratives.

Mica and Caleb acknowledge that their vision could only be realized by working with a high-caliber creative and production team.

“Another important factor was having a passionate director and production team who understood the kind of storytelling this material needed — from casting and production design, to cinematography, music, and even to the smallest details — and brought it to life in a way that stayed true to Filipino soap operas. Director Marius Talampas and Arcade Film Factory masterfully executed the film as a beautiful cinematic piece, with music by Hit Productions Inc., color grading by Barebones Inc., and production supervision by Just Add Water Inc.

For industry watchers, the film marks a notable moment in entertainment and branded experience. It shows a flag carrier leaning fully into cultural insight to make a mandatory piece of safety communication connect meaningfully with passengers.

Alvin Miranda, Vice President for Marketing at Philippine Airlines, said, “This project challenged us to rethink safety communication from the ground up. Filipino audiences connect through story, emotion, and shared cultural language so we embraced that truth. The Safetynovela reflects our commitment to elevating even the most functional parts of the journey.”

David Guerrero, Creative Chairman at BBDO Guerrero, added, “We are all familiar with in-flight safety videos, and this familiarity can lead people to pay less attention to them. Working with Philippine Airlines, we wanted to change that by tapping into the love people have for telenovelas and creating one they’d watch all the way to the end. The Metro Manila Film Festival is the perfect stage for the Safetynovela, connecting us with an audience that loves a good story.”
