D&AD Impact 2019: Cagayan de Oro Handmade Paper Craft’s “Pinyapel” by Design Center of the Philippines, Enters Shortlist with Genius Idea from Discarded Pineapple Leaves

LONDON – Cagayan de Oro Handmade Paper Craft‘s Pinyapel, developed by the Design Center of the Philippines, has won a prestigious finalist place on an accelerator programme that aims to help bring the idea of specialty paper from locally sourced discarded pineapple leaves to market.

Pinyapel aims to solve the problem of agricultural waste and deforestation by reusing discarded pineapple leaves to create specialty paper and packaging.With the Philippines being the second largest pineapple producer, Pinyapel offers a solution for agricultural wastes by giving them a new purpose and value – increasing the livelihood of pineapple farmers.

Reflecting on being part of the D&AD Future Impact Cohort, Rolyn Lomocso of The Design Center of the Philippines commented, “Our ambition is for Pinyapel to be commercially and industrially available and to be the impetus to spark innovation in using agricultural wastes to replace forest trees in producing paper.

The Future Impact Programme shall provide the Design Center and its collaborators with the necessary guidance, mentoring, network, and funding to take Pinyapel to the next level, which is to be commercially and industrially available.”

Pinyapel is one of ten creativity-for-good ideas that will be part of the D&AD Future Impact Programme, which aims to support and accelerate great ideas that have the potential to change the world.

This includes access to a shared prize fund worth $150,000 and the D&AD Future Impact Accelerator, a two-day masterclass programme aiming to provide tangible tips and tools to inspire them to take their idea to the next level with the ambition of delivering tangible impact within twelve months.

The D&AD Future Impact Programme is part of the D&AD Impact Awards, a global initiative and and awards programme that exists to use creative thinking to drive positive change. D&AD is globally renowned for being one of the most prestigious global awards in design and advertising.

 

D&AD Future Impact

The D&AD Future Impact Programme is a ten-person programme where successful entrants will receive access to a shared prize fund worth $150,000, which also includes attending the D&AD Future Impact Accelerator, a two-day masterclass programme aiming to provide tangible tips and tools to inspire students to take their idea to the next level. The winners will receive consultancy, mentoring from creativity and sustainability experts to help successful entrants bring their ideas to market, masterclasses and development grants, as well as access to a creative, peer-driven network, supporting them to continue their world-changing work and enable the cohort to deliver tangible impact over twelve months within their category area.
