The prestigious, London-based Design and Art Direction (D&AD) Awards is accepting entries online at http://awards09.dandad.org until Jan. 21, 2009.
Organized in 1962, the D&AD is famous for its Pencils: Yellow for Creative Excellence and Black for Groundbreaking masterpieces. Yellow Pencil awardees progress to Black Pencil judging. Founders David Bailey, Terence Donovan, Alan Fletcher and Colin Forbes created the D&AD to lift industry standards, and it has since become one of the toughest shows in the business.
What is less known, however, is that D&AD awards Pencils not only for advertising, but for graphic design, including Publication Design. This particular category covers Book Design, Illustration, and Magazine & Newspaper Design, as well as Press Advertising. Magazine entries are for all types, from indie publications to celebrity and entertainment weeklies, inflight branded, and even member-ship mags. Publications with online counterparts may be entered if a seamless extension of print and online can be established.
In its 46 years, the non-profit organization has embraced global creative, design and advertising communities, to instill the spirit of inspired excellence through education and entrepreneurial acu-men on future generations. Truly a global phenomenon, the D&AD receives over 25,000 entries from 70 countries. Judges composed of 300 of the world’s leading creatives form 29 specialist juries for each category. Judging is based on only three qualities: originality and inspiration, exceptional execution, and relevance to its context.
