$8.48 million to go into payphones integrated with ads in Malaysia

ASIA-PACIFIC – KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA, AUGUST 1, 2011 – Pernec PayPoint Sdn Bhd and Katchi Group Sdn Bhd launched last month the Pernec Katchi City Mix phone booths, a newly-designed phone booth which combines the function of a payphone together with static and scrolling advertising panels on the other side.

Pernec Katchi is set to invest up to RM25 million ($8.48 million) in the next three years. Pernec Chairman Datuk Zainun Aishah Ahmad stated the Pernec Katchi collaboration plans to roll out 1,000 City Mix booths in the first year, another 1,000 in the second year and 1,500 in the third, to be located in various locations across Malaysia.  It will also become the first communications channel that can put up a nationwide campaign within 72 hours.

Speaking at the launch of the City Mix booth in Kuala Lumpur, Datuk Zainun noted that Pernec PayPoint has over 40,000 phone booths nationwide, all of which are potential sites to be turned into a City Mix booth.

“Extensive research and development was conducted in the creation and production of the City Mix. Each booth is made to be future proof and environmentally friendly. I am delighted to share that this out-of-home medium is the first of many innovative initiatives to come out of this collaborative partnership between Pernec PayPoint and Katchi Group,” said Datuk Zainun.

“The Pernec Katchi City Mix pay phone is a masterful blend of functional communication networks fused with state-of-the-art technology, breathing new life into the public pay phone industry. It will no longer be just a phone,” said Katchi Group CEO Dr Marceline Lemarie."
