Google Doodle showcases Philippine marine life for Independence Day

MANILA – Google Philippines celebrates the 120th anniversary of Philippine Independence with a Doodle that features Philippine marine life.

Home to at least 2,000 aquatic species and long clusters of corals, the Philippines is regarded as world’s “center of marine biodiversity.”

The Doodle captures the underwater depths with an image of the seabed, explored by Moorish idols (the yellow striped fish), blue spotted stingrays, and a whale shark. Coral reefs, which serves as habitat to these aquatic species, break the blue waters with its bright colors. The image of the marine life is wrapped in a ribbon frame in the colors of the Philippine flag.

On June 12, visitors clicking on the Doodle on Google Philippines’ homepage will discover more about this part of Filipino heritage, and the life and abundance of the Philippine seas.

This is the ninth year that Google has marked this significant event in Philippine history with a Google Doodle.

Aside from featuring elements of the Philippine flag, previous years’ Doodles also depicted the Pinoy jeepney, celebrated the tradition of bayanihan, and showcased the Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit, Cavite, where the Philippine Declaration of Independence from Spain was declared.

Google has been coming up with fun and surprising doodles to celebrate holidays, anniversaries, and the lives of famous artists, pioneers, and scientists. Recently, Google Philippines paid homage to esteemed Filipino artists Francisco Balagtas and Levi Celerio.
