In Real Life, Too – Gaiman helps a dream engagement come true

Add “Matchmaker” to his list of accolades.
Neil Gaiman, world famous fantasy author (Sandman, MirrorMask, Beowulf, et al) and one of the keynote speakers in the recent 20th Philippine Advertising Congress, played a key role in what may probably be one of the world’s coolest marriage proposals ever.
Long challenged by his peers to propose to longtime love in the most creative way possible, Ogilvy & Mather copywriter Jason Drilon came up with a brilliant premise:“What if I could get Neil Gaiman, our most fave author and fantasy writer, to help propose to her?”
So Drilon came up with a plan to achieve just that.
After nearly two weeks worth of planning and clandestine meetings with key members of the AdCon Planning Committee, Fully Booked staff and Gaiman himself,  the stage was literally set. Drilon brought then-girlfriend-now-fiancée Maui Reyes from BBDO Guererro Ortega to the scribe’s scheduled book signing in Subic. Once onstage, Gaiman, wrote “Will you marry Jason?” inside Reyes’ book. Amazingly, it took the star-struck Reyes several glances (and Gaiman’s kind insistence) to actually read the dedication before the enormity of the words sunk in.
Maui: (gets her signed book back) Thanks!!!
Neil: Aren’t you going to read what I wrote? You have to read it.
Maui: (opening the book) Thanks!!!.
Neil: You really have to read this…
Maui: (reads Neil’s dedication) OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD!
Drilon then brought out a ring, kneeled and proposed. Reyes said yes, of course, and claps and cheers from the crowd then ensued.
And that’s how Neil Gaiman, the Dream King, made one guy’s
fan-tastic proposal come true.
