by Anna Gamboa

Dr. Patrick Flores discusses Purita Kalaw-Ledesma’s masteral thesis.

Presenting a lecture on February 16, 2016 at 4:30 p.m. at the newly-inaugurated Purita Kalaw-Ledesma center, Dr. Patrick Flores revisits with a select audience “A Critical Analysis of Modern Painting in the Philippines Today.” Written in 1955 by Purita Kalaw-Ledesma, who would go on to become one of the country’s authorities on arts and culture, the paper outlined the author’s concerns about the nature of art in the Philippines.

Examining the preference for modernism in painting, as encouraged by the Art Association of the Philippines (which Kalaw-Ledesma co-founded), it will be enlightening to experience the discussion as viewed almost 61 years later, especially when it came to institution building and art criticism. Ms. Kalaw-Ledesma is credited for encouraging the careers of many modern Filipino artists revered today, and her critical eye and choice words served to educate those who cared to know more about the evolution of art and aesthetic appreciation in the country.

Brought in partnership with Art Fair Philippines 2016, the center is located at the 8th floor of the KL Tower, 117 Gamboa St., Legaspi Village, Makati. Admission is free to the lecture, but 60 seats are only available. RSVP at 843 2696 or email kalawledesmagroup@yahoo.com.
