TBWA Santiago Mangada Puno team’s get-rich-here scheme lands it a slot in the Young Spikes competition

PHILIPPINES, AUGUST 18, 2010 – Twenty-one teams from 15 agencies converged at the BBDO Guerrero/Proximity Philippines office yesterday afternoon after a sleepless (and for some, shower-less) Monday night  for the results of the Philippine Young Spikes competition. By the end of the afternoon, TBWASantiago Mangada Puno’s Alfredo "Ali" Silao & Georgina "George" Angsanto were named the country’s representatives to the Young Spikes Integrated Competition.

The brief of the 24-hour challenge called for an integrated campaign for the Bureau of Local Employment. The objective was to get graduates fresh out of college to work in the Philippines instead of getting jobs abroad, putting the plug on the country’s brain drain.

Judges from the Creative Guild deliberated for hours behind closed doors before calling on the top six teams from Ace Saatchi & Saatchi, BBDO Guerrero/Proximity Philippines, Leo Burnett Manila, JWT Manila and two teams from TBWASantiago Mangada Puno to present their boards.

The runner-up team, BBDO Guerrero/Proximity Philippines’ JP Palileo and Knox Balbastro (above, left and 2nd from left), presented a full campaign with several contact points, including TV commercials, print ads, installations, as well as direct mail for an event bringing together 3,000 of the most promising young minds. The efforts are sustained by a website similar to TED.com.

Angsanto and Silao took a guerrilla approach to practicality. The pair branded the Philippines as "A Cheap Place to Get Rich", pointing to the high cost of living elsewhere in the world. Their campaign includes a website, www.EarnInPesos.ph, where users can make a pledge to stay in the country.

Angsanto, 25, a graduate of De La Salle University met 27-year-old Silao when she joined TBWASMP in February this year. Silao, a product of the University of the Philippines – Los Banos, has been with the agency for five years. The team won an all-expenses paid trip to the Spikes Asia festival in Singapore next month, where they will compete with young creatives from all over Asia in creating the best integrated campaign for a charity within 48 hours. JWT Manila ECD Dave Ferrer will serve in the Young Spikes jury this year. (Abby Yao)
