Saatchi, BBDO Proximity big winners at Malaysia’s 2008 Kancil Awards

At Malaysia’s Kancil Awards night on Nov. 28th, an international panel of judges awarded BBDO Proximity the 2008 Golden Kancil for its Anti-Drink & Drive Campaign, "Wheelchair". BBDO Proximity was also the most awarded agency that night.  Saatchi & Saatchi was named Agency of the Year, based on points accumulated at six international shows in addition to the Kancils.  It was the second consecutive year that Saatchi received the honor.

The jury awarded more prizes this year, which suggests rising creative standards in Malaysian advertising.  A total of 22 gold, 46 silver, 52 bronze and 90 merit awards were given, to the Kancils’ top 30 agencies. "Judging this year was extremely tough. But the standard of work has remained the high level that it has in the last few years. A small percentage of work was truly world-class," said Jury Chairman Ronald Ng, also Executive Creative Director of BBDO Proximity.

There was an encouraging number of game-changing work, which were the biggest winners. BBDO Proximity’s Jeep campaign emerged as one of the most awarded in Kancil history, with 10 golds and a silver across various categories. Jeep’s "Bushman & Eskimo" campaign was named Best of Poster; "Bushman & Eskimo/ Husky & Camel/ Mountain Goat & Crocodile" print campaigns won Best of Print. The same agency’s Golden Kancil-winning "Wheelchair" campaign also won two other awards: the Rebel Idea (Titanium Category) of 2008, alongside Naga DDB/Rapp Collins’ Prudential BSN Corporate campaign, "Distraction"; and best of innovative.

Another top performer across categories was Saatchi’s Silverfishbooks campaign, with two golds, 6 silvers, two bronzes and a merit award.  Independent agency Immerse Communications’ Volvo C30 campaign came out best in the internet and interactive media, beating two other agencies for the gold. Y&R Malaysia’s Colgate 360 campaign "Brushing" won Best of Radio.  The Young Creative Award went to BBDO Proximity’s Gary Lim and Willeon Leong.

The awards were unanimously decided by a jury panel of local and international judges – all "game-changers" in their businesses and fields. Judges included Jon Dranger (farfar), Iain Tait (Poke), Flo Heiss (Dare), Sean Lam (Kinetic), Alex Burnard (Crispin Porter + Bogusky), Matty Burton (droga5), Thirasak (Creative Juice), Pann Lim (Kinetic), and Sonal Dabral (Bates), among others.
