How long does it take to learn the Philippine national language? The Mark Peckson Project of Ace-Saatchi & Saatchi attempts to discover in a month-long experiment.
Following the (grumble, yawn, grumble) escapades of Saatchi’s Peckson, is perhaps an attempt to drive the point: A Filipino cannot speak the national language. What of it? August, by the way, is the Buwan ng Wika (Language Month). What new word did you learn, Mark?
Saatchi’s client Yabang Pinoy, a non-profit organization of students and young professionals, believes that speaking the native tongue will mark the return of the Filipino, full of pride and passion for the Philippines.
Technology now affords communication in a flash. Embrace diversity, is the global cry. But can it be ‘master ethnicity then embrace diversity’? Seven thousand one hundred islands harboring hundreds of dialects, the Philippines is. Good luck to the project!
