Philippine Association of National Advertisers

For fifty years now, the Philippine Association of National Advertisers (PANA) has been doing its best to fulfill its role and leadership as a self-regulatory body geared towards the promotion of Truth in Advertising.
It has been through a lot of ups and downs, yet the association vows to do better. This year, their thrust is to work closely with the advertising industry. Perhaps they can build on the achievements of the past officers. Raul Alvarez, in his outgoing President’s report, mentioned three kinds of ripples created by his leadership. These are the various activities implemented to help improve PANA members’ practices, formation of the new Advertising Standards Council (ASC) and finally the substantial participation of PANA members in the next Philippine Advertising Congress.
Staying focused on this year’s thrust, newly inducted president Charmaine Canillas acknowledged the invaluable role of players in the advertising industry including research companies, production houses and media channels. She stressed that the people behind these groups hold the key to make it more efficient and economical to inform, influence and persuade consumers to buy their products.
PANA’s 50th Anniversary logo was also unveiled during the turnover ceremony held at the Manila Peninsula this January.

Sworn in last March 12 by no less than Sandy Prieto Romualdez were United Print Media Group’s new set of officers for year 2008-2009.  Culled from the country’s leading credible dailies, a major publishing house, and an advertising and brand communications specialty magazine; the new board members are Pepito Olarte of Philippine Daily Inquirer as president; Lucien Dy Tioco of Philippine Star as vice-president; Edwin Valera of Atlas Publishing as secretary; Danny Ocampo of Business World as treasurer; Ron Tamayo of Abante as auditor; Ricky Alegre of Business Mirror as PRO; and Tess Ramirez of Cebu Daily News, Angel Guerrero of adobo magazine, Bess Zamora of Manila Times, and Pat Pineda, chairman emeritus of Manila Bullet  in, as board directors.
Ad spend was at an all-time record low in 2006.   But according to Pepito Olarte of PDI, print advertising enjoyed a 15 percent growth rate in 2007. Prodded by this hike in print ad spend, this year’s induction ceremony had the apt theme “PRINT: Bigger, Stronger.”
In line with this theme, TBWA\SMP and McCann Erickson came out with promotional print campaigns for the medium. Due to the business performance of print-heavy advertisers such as telecommunications, real estate, retail, malls, fashion, cosmetics, automotive, banks, airlines, fast foods and consumer products; Olarte is positive that the print industry will enjoy continuous growth ahead.
