‘Aurelio Sedisyoso,’ a rock zarzuela on the Philippine revolution’s seditious playwright

Riding the wave of momentum created by Mabining Mandirigma, a steampunk musical on the heroic life of Apolinario Mabini, Tanghalang Pilipino, the resident theater company of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, with the support of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, returns with another landmark musical that chronicles the life of one of the most significant heroic figures in Philippine history: Aurelio Tolentino, a seditious playwright and actor who, together with Andres Bonifacio and Macario Sakay, founded the Teatro Porvenir. Aurelio Sedisyoso, a rock sarswela, opens Tanghalang Pilipino’s 31st Season with the theme “Freedom Writers, Freedom Fighters”

Playing at the theater named after its protagonist, Aurelio Sedisyoso runs at the CCP Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino (CCP Little Theater) from September 1 – 17, 2017 with Friday shows at 8pm, Saturday shows at 3pm and 8pm, and Sunday shows at 3:00pm.

As a sequel to Mabining Mandirigma, which focused on the Mabini-Aguinaldo conflict in the second phase of the revolution, Aurelio Sedisyoso dramatizes the conflicts in Philippine society in the period between 1902 and 1907, which, unknown to many, constitutes the third phase of the revolution, and the years from 1908 to 1915 which represents the last chapter in the life of Aurelio Tolentino. It investigates and analyses the events in this crucial period of Philippine history from the point of view of an outstanding personality of the period whom the Americans feared – Aurelio Tolentino.

With the same winning artistic team behind the success of Mabining Mandirigma, Aurelio Sedisyoso is directed by CCP Vice President and Artistic Director Chris Millado with Book and Lyrics by Dr. Nicanor Tiongson and Music by Joed Balsamo. Completing the rest of the artistic team are Denisa Reyes for Choreography, Toym Imao for Set Design, Katsch Catoy for Lighting Design, James Reyes fo Costume Design, GA Fallarme for Projection Design, and TJ Ramos for Sound Design, with Barbie Tan-Tiongco for Technical Direction. Francis de Veyra of Radioactive Sago joins the team as Musical Arranger.

The stellar cast is led by powerhouse tenor David Ezra essaying the role of Aurelio Tolentino and award-winning film actor Baron Geisler portraying the allegorical character Tikbalang, a shape-shifter that takes on the different faces and phases of American colonization. The Tanghalang Pilipino Actors Company’s Jonathan Tadioan, JV Ibesate, Aldo Vencilao, Blanche Buhia, Joshua Tayco, Eunice Pacia and Monique Nellas, as well as Remus Villanueva, Hazel Maranan, Kakki Teodoro, Norby David (former co-vocalist of Rivermaya), Jing Reyna-Jorge (former vocalist and violinist of Sugar Hiccup), Paw Castillo, Phi Palmos, Alfritz Blanche, Tope Kliatchko, Ali Santos, Sigrid Balbas, Aika Zabala, Sasa Cabalquinto, Raflesia Bravo, Jasper Cabra, and Lian Silverio, comprise the exciting cast for this rock sarswela.
