adobo Design Awards 2012 celebrates the 24 winners of the best in design

THE PHILIPPINES, APRIL 20, 2012: Returning for its third edition, the 2012 adobo Design Awards crowned 24 winners from a pool of hundreds of entries. With the stakes set even higher, the jury, which included 12 of the top names in advertising and design, employed a stricter criteria and measured against the global standards of excellence.
 
The Main Category, open to professionals, showcased commercially released works made available to consumers during the previous year. A total of 11 sub-categories were included in the roster – Poster, Books, Logo, Website, Music Video, Environmental Design, Packaging, 3D Product, Interactive Design/Game Design, Wearable, and Broadcast/Animation.
 
Ace Saatchi & Saatchi led the winners’ list with a trophy count of six, including a couple of Grand Prix. The agency scooped the Best Poster Design for their work on Olay’s “Reverse Ageing” campaign, which, coincidentally, was also a finalist in the Design category recently concluded ADFEST 2012. Adding to the agency’s awards haul are the victories for Best Environmental Design for Ariel Detergent Powder’s “Fashion Laundry” and Best 3D Product for Tiger Biscuit’s “Energy Playground”. Ace Saatchi & Saatchi picked up the Best Use of Photography in Communications Design for its fourth win.
 
The two Grand Prix for Ace Saatchi & Saatchi were Best Design for Advertising (Olay “Reverse Ageing”) and Best Design for Advocacy/Corporate Social Responsibility (Tiger Biscuit’s “Energy Playground”.
 
TBWASantiago Mangada Puno followed with five trophies, composed of a Grand Prix, two major awards, and two special awards. The “Lakihan Mo Logo 15” video picked up three awards – the Best Design for Self Promotion Grand Prix, Best Design for Broadcast/Animation, and the Best Use of Typography in Advertising or Communications special award. The agency’s fourth and fifth trophies were for “ t of Life” – a touching story of two toys falling in love – for non-government organization Manikako. The video of Blitz the robot and Lily the doll won the Best Design for a Music Video trophy, a major award, and the Best Use of Music and Sound Effects special award. 
 
Two trophies were awarded to Campaigns & Grey – “Patalastas Shirts” won the Best Design for Packaging, while the “Moody Watch” the agency designed for the Natasha Goulbourn Foundation picked up the win for Best Wearable Design. Freelancer Karl Frederick Castro won the Best Design award for the Books category with “Si Amapola sa 65 na Kabanata”. Castro was the only freelancer to bag an award in the entire show.
 
The Logo Design category ended with a tie – Ysobel Aboitiz of Forensik Brand Identity  (“The Post Office” for The Post Office) and BBDO Guerrero/Proximity Philippines (“It’s More Fun in the Philippines Logo” for the Department of Tourism) shared the honor. BBDO’s work for the country branding campaign also won the Grand Prix for Best Design for Corporate or Brand Identity.
 
TV5’s work for the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority’s “Traffic Navigator App” scored the Best Interactive Design/Game Design award. Meanwhile, the final special award – Best Use of Illustration in Communications Products – was nabbed by DDB Philippines for the “Fine China – Vase” piece from their Monami Pens campaign.
 
This year also saw to the introduction of the Theme category, open to professionals, freelancers, and students, both undergraduate and graduate levels. For its inaugural year, the Theme category called for the best designs promoting a positive image of the Philippines, which should be incorporated to a bag accessory or a back cover of a mobile phone.
 
Lorenzo Martin Alajar of Dentsu Philippines bagged the MyPhone Theme Category, professional division, with his design “PH Pop Culture”, while Relly Coquia’s “Festivals: More Fun in the Philippines” brought De La Salle, College of St. Benilde to the top of the student division.
 
MyPhone also handed out a Choice Award, which went to Danne Mavigale Lim of Dentsu Philippines and her design “Turista."
 
“Tag Pinoy” by Elvin Villar of JWT Manila scored the Bratpack Theme Category trophy for professionals, while the student winner is Justine de Jesus from Lyceum of the Philippines University (“You are the Juan”). Dentsu picked up the Bratpack Choice Award, with Paulo Villones’ “Turo-Turo”.
 
Brian Tenorio (Designers for Development Network, New York) led the jury panel, composed of Andrew Petch (ECD, Ace Saatchi & Saatchi), David Guerrero (chairman and CCO, BBDO Guerrero), Dan Matutina (designer and illustrator, Twisted Fork), AJ Dimarucot (freelance graphic designer), Apol Sta. Maria (ACD, JWT Manila), Manuel Villafania (CD, TBWASMP), Merlee Jayme (CCO, DM9 JaymeSyfu), Yodel Pe (designer), Jowee Alviar (president, Team Manila), Mon Punzalan (managing director, Team Manila), and Robert Alejandro (designer).
