Araw Awards takes new perspective on jury selection, judging starts today

The wait is over, and over 2000 entries will be subject to the ratings game.  The line-up of judges for this year’s Araw Awards is final, and judging commences today, November 5 at the Shangri-la Makati.

With the inclusion of new categories, above all, marketing effectiveness and business returns of entries, this year’s Araw Awards called for a different perspective on the jury composition.  A new perspective merited the assembly of a healthy representation of the communications industry—clients, agency heads, creative directors, planners, media directors, digital and design specialists.

Joining the jury are four judges from the region:  Darren McColl, National Planning Director of Sapient Nitro, the agency behind The Best Job in the World campaign; Alex Lim, Creative Director of Leo Burnett Singapore; Joel Clement, Regional Creative Director of Saatchi & Saatchi Bangkok; and Melissa Crucillo from Nike Southeast Asia.

International jurors:

Alex Lim Creative Director, Leo Burnett Singapore
Alex began his career as a designer after graduating from Monash University with a degree in Graphic Design.  4 years later, he pursued his career in advertising and won the coveted Best New Art Director Award at the Singapore Creative Circle Awards in 2000.   Since then, Alex’s work has won over 100 major awards including The D&AD, One Show, Clio, Cannes International, Art Director’s Club, New York Festivals, Media Spikes, London International, AdFest and Communication Arts.

Darren McColl National Planning Director, Sapient Nitro
With a career of more than 20 years, he has worked on the client side and within advertising agencies, large and small. It’s really given him a great expanse of communication and brand strategy experience.   Darren has worked across a range of local and global brands including: Virgin Blue, Virgin Megastore, Velocity, McDonald’s, Nestlé, Foster’s Brewing, Racing Victoria, Ford, Mercedes Benz trucks, Merrill Lynch, Zespri Kiwi Fruit, Yalumba Wines, State Governments of Victoria and Queensland, Mrs Field’s Cookies, Tourism Queensland, Stockland, Sanofi Aventis Consumer (Nature’s Own, Cenovis, Betadine etc), Supercheap Auto, Mars Snacks and many more.  Recently he was the project leader and strategist behind "The Best Job in the World” campaign for Tourism Queensland, one of the most awarded campaigns of 2008. When not at work, he’s scuba diving, riding his Harley, fishing or reading some strange book on Psychology or an obscure biography

Joel Clement Regional Creative Director, Saatchi & Saatchi
Joel Clement has won 2,427 advertising awards. 448 of those are the coveted Cannes Lions. He is the first person in the world to ever to win gold at Cannes 14 years in a row. He melts down his bronze and silver lions to make coins which he donates to the homeless. He does this in the workshop in his ranch in Guatemala where he is conducting a program to save a rare tropical butterfly from extinction. He has swum the English Channel. Twice.  Angelina Jolie often calls Joel on the phone and nervously hangs up when she hears his voice. Joel appears in the Guinness Book of World Records first when he was six years old for winning a spelling bee- in Sanskrit. He can kick your ass. He once saved a baby from getting run over in New York City by jumping in front of a speeding train. Barack Obama asked Joel regularly for campaign advice. So did John McCain. But Joel gave McCain bad advice on purpose. Joel’s parents are very proud of him.

Melissa Crucillo Southeast Asia Retail Brand Marketing Lead, Nike Southeast Asia
Prior to taking on a regional role with Nike Asia, Melissa was Nike’s Country Marketing Director for the Philippines.  She brought with her years of agency experience, working in multinational advertising agencies, including BBDO Asia Pacific, Ogilvy & Mather Asia Pacific, BBDO-Guerrero Ortega Philippines, Ogilvy & Mather Manila and Ace Saatchi & Saatchi.    An avid runner, Melissa recently joined the Hood To Coast Race, an annual Nike-sponsored relay run in Oregon that saw her running three 10-kilometer stretches, some of them at 2 in the morning!
