NADPOP launches the Philippines’ 1st Data Privacy Awards

The National Association of Data Protection Officers of the Philippines (NADPOP) launches the search for the most outstanding individuals and institutions that have championed Data Privacy in the country.

Founded almost a year ago by Data Protection Officers (DPOs), data privacy practitioners, security advocates and technology professionals, NADPOP believes that by recognizing the efforts of individuals and institutions, its vision of transforming the country into a Global Center of Excellence for Data Privacy will further gain momentum and become a reality.

“NADPOP exists to empower DPOs. Through the 1st DATOS PRIVADOS Awards for Service, Leadership, Excellence and Innovation in Data Privacy, we will further strengthen the country’s data ecosystem that emerged when the Data Privacy Act (DPA) was signed into law in 2012,” Sam Jacoba, NADPOP Founding President said. “The PRIVADO, as the award is called, will complement the ground-breaking work that the National Privacy Commission, through the leadership of Chairman Raymund Liboro, has done in the past two and a half years to strengthen the foundation of data protection in the country’s key industries,” Jacoba added.

He explained that “the DPA and the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, are the twin laws now shaping the landscape on how personal information is harnessed, managed, and protected by institutions and individuals in the country,” Jacoba added. “Industries have emerged from these two laws. Personal data is now one of the most valuable and competitive resource of companies. It is vital that these two laws, along with previous complementing laws, set the guard rails on how this resource can be utilized without violating the rights of data subjects.”

This year, several high profile cases of data breaches have been published and investigated by the NPC, like the recent incident at the Miss Earth Pageant. Amidst all of these, NADPOP aims to inspire those who have complied and became more competitive with the law, and are willing to share their experiences and best practices where other DPOs can draw inspiration from.

“The NPC recently reported that over 20,000 DPOs have already registered with the commission. NADPOP in less than a year already has more than 200 members. These numbers though are just drops in the bucket as the DPA mandates that all companies that manage personal information comply with the law,” Titus Manuel, NADPOP Founding Chair said.

“With The Privado Awards, NADPOP hopes that more and more DPOs will ensure that the personal information that they manage will be protected 24/7,” Manuel added.

The DATOS PRIVADOS Awards will be officially launched on December 6 during NADPOP’s Year End event, where the initial set of nominees will be announced. The call for nominees has begun November 19. The last day of acceptance of nominations will be on January 18, 2019, Friday. The awards night will happen on January 29, 2019 during the 1st NADPOP Data Privacy Conference called 1*DATA.
