422 … Zapped!

When computer graphics house 422 counted down to a new name at the rooftop of Fully Booked at Bonifacio High Street last Friday, it was a blast.  Make that ZAP!, actually.   Yes, 422 is now officially ZAP! Visual Effects.

“This is not a shift.  It’s an expansion of services,” said ZAP! Visual Effects big boss Rainier Pengson. “Our thrust is to service pre- to post-production, from digital to physical, even camera effects.  It’s now end-to-end production service.”

The expansion allows ZAP! to consolidate specializations for an holistic approach.  “Normally, the practice is tingi-tingi (piecemeal), and that compromises film use.  ZAP! presents savings on cost and increases efficiency,” Pengson added. Targeting ever more cost-and-efficiency-conscious producers, ZAP! has its sights on directors and ad creatives for its design components and capabilities.

On Friday, Sept. 26, ZAP! debuted with no speeches and lots of fun.  (It’s not for nothing that Pengson also runs events company Mediamaker.)  SounDesign provided the sound effects for ZAP!’s launch video, which Pengson admits left him speechless.  Welcome shots of limoncello and free-flowing tequila kept the crowd stoked for killer performances from industry bands like Enemies of Saturn, Chilitees, Dirty Kitchen, Pasok Mga Bwitre, Sound and Astrojuan, to name a few. “These bands are all my friends, and they’ll perform  all-out for their friends,” shared Pengson with a wide grin.
