IMMAP offers assistance in revising Cyber Law

MANILA, OCTOBER 12, 2012 – The Internet and Mobile Marketing Association of the Philippines has expressed interest in assisting the government with the revision of the Cybercrime Law.

In a statement published on its website, IMMAP acknowledged the goal of the recently enacted law to protect individuals and establishments against cybercrime offenses but questions some sections of the act that "can be misinterpreted to constitute prior restraint and abridgement of freedom of expression".

IMMAP is offering its facilities, executive time and services as a channel for discussion and dialogue with the government to assist in the policy refinement, implementation and/or education for the industry, in general and the consumer, in particular. IMMAP is initiating discussions and workshops with other advertising industry associations under AdBoard and ASC to tackle the commercial issues that may face the advertising industry.

The full text of IMMAP’s statement can be found in their website.

Still on the subject of Cybercrime Prevention, IMMAP joined a round table discussion on Friday afternoon, October 12, with the Advertising Board of the Philippines and other concerned organizations from the industry.

Atty Jose Jesus M Disini Jr presented the features of the two new laws – Cybercrime Prevention Act (RA 10175) and Data Privacy Act (RA 10173) – and how it could affect the advertising industry. He focused on RA 10173, which has gotten zero attention but impact "just as great" as RA 10175.
