AdBoard Cup 2009: UPMG wins a year-long golf tourney

While the first day of the 21st AdCon featured the launch of many activities, it did signal the end of one: the AdBoard Cup 2009. Started in February, June and August this year, with the final leg concluded yesterday at Mimosa.
That leg, held in Clarkfield, Pampanga and entitled “Mulligan…Galingan…Tulungan”, teed off at 6 am. It ended with Team UPMG as champions, with 135 points. UPMG won two out of the four legs and garnered an extra three points to narrowly beat runner-up KBP.
UPMG Chairman and Team Captain Ricky Alegre said, “It is a great honor for us to win this, as we really scouted for eligible players who can play the sport well,” Alegre said. < height="166" width="250" align="right" alt="" src=" upmg champ1. " />
“We are very happy that we are able to participate as a team as we share this amazing camaraderie with the industry. We’ve come to see everyone very alive again through the spirit of competition in a very friendly environment,” Alegre added.
According to the 21st PAC Golf Committee Chair Frank Abueva, the vision behind conducting four golf legs that ran within the year was “to encourage more participation, develop more social interaction and more opportunities for fellowship” among colleagues. Moreover, the Ad Board were doubly motivated;  proceeds of the Adboard Cup will go to the victims of the recent calamities through the Red Cross Baguio Chapter.
Eight organizations battled it out, with more than a hundred participants, which include the United Print Media Group (UPMG); the Outdoor Advertising Association of the Philippines (OAAP); the Philippine Association of National Advertisers (PANA); the Association of Accredited Advertising Agencies (4As); the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP); the Advertising Services and Promotions (ASAP); some guest players and the Founders Group, composed of respected pillars of various industries.
The champions for the different categories are: Individual Class A- Carlo Llave of OAAP; Individual Class B – Ricky Alegre from UPMG; Individual Class C – Louie Morales; and Individual Class D – Alex Castro from the Founders Group. For the Ladies and Guests Division, Monique Ignacio of 4As and Victor Macutay, nabbed the championship, respectively.
Special awards are also given to: Rudy Fulo (Overall Gross Champion); Arnold Cheung (Overall Net Champion); Daryl Abueva from OAAP (Most Accurate Drive) and Manny Atienza from UPMG (Nearest to the Pin).
The success of the Adboard Cup this year  encourages the 21st PAC Sports Committee to hold the tournament again next year. Serving as preparation period for the 22nd PAC in 2011, Sports Committee Chair Ed Acosta believed that all the industries joining hands to support each other through sports can also transcend to helping sustain relationships in the industry.
“Golf is already a tradition in the Ad congress. When we improved the format, we successfully united the industry by playing together and supporting each other through tournaments like this,” Acosta said.
