MANILA – After two grueling days of judging held at Green Sun, 122 finalists emerged out of over 400 entries submitted to the adobo Design Awards Asia 2017 (aDAA).

For the second year running, aDAA has the full support of D&AD, the world’s toughest and most prestigious design awards. 20 professional categories patterned after the show include Press and Poster, Corporate/Brand Identity, Typography, Illustration, Book Design, Magazine and Newspaper, Film Advertising, Videos, Short Film, Film/Video Craft, Graphic Design, Packaging Design, Outdoor, Environmental/Spatial, Product Design, Wearable Design, Production Design, Photography, Digital/Interactive, and Mobile, sponsored by Globe, Student Category, and Open Category.

The jury was led by no less than D&AD’s President, Bruce Duckworth. He was joined by Tokyo’s most award-winning creative director from Dentsu Tokyo, Inc., Yoshihiro Yagi, renowned local designers, artists, and agency executives, Merlee Jayme, chairmom and chief creative officer at Dentsu Jayme Syfu,  CJ de Silva-Ong, associate creative director at TBWA\Santiago Mangada Puno, Patrick Cabral, typographer and calligrapher, Dan Matutina, founding partner at Plus63 Designs, Robert Alejandro, founder and designer at RAD, Jowee Alviar, co-founder and creative director at Team Manila, Harvey Tolibao, Marvel and DC Comics artist, Wawi Navarroza, internationally acclaimed photographer and founder at Thousandfold, Quark Henares, film director and head of Globe Studios, Ivan Despi, owner and creative director at The Acid House.

With the theme, Inspiring Humanity Through Design, design works with a purpose took center stage.

“Trying to give the work that we do a purpose that’s a little bit bigger and doing anything to make people’s lives a little bit better I think is a great step forward,” shared Duckworth.

“All of this art, if it pushes goodness, somehow it will inspire goodness among ourselves in this world. And that for me is the whole purpose why we’re here and why we’re creative,” commented Jayme.

This year’s entries from both professionals and students showcased the cultural diversity not just in the Philippines but in Asia.

“There was a lot of teasing out of different cultural differences between what I would understand as a Westerner,” said Duckworth. “I love the diversity, it’s very good,” added Alejandro.
