Advertising veterans garner major nominations in Gawad Urian Awards 2010

Advertising and film-making have become so close, the lines are getting blurry.  In the 33rd Gawad Urian Awards, the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino (MPP) has shortlisted the 2010 entries and the list tells it all.

A host of nominees are from advertising and related industries. “Kinatay” and “Lola” by Brillante Mendoza, and “Himpapawid” by Raymond Red.  Mendoza was and still is a production designer, and in 2009, won the Cannes Film Festival for Best Direction.  Red is a well-known TV commercial director.

Both advertising veterans are nominated, with their films, for Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Production Design, Best Cinematography, Best Editing and Best Sound.  “Kinatay” also has a Best Music nomination.  Members of the cast of the three movies also garnered nominations for individual performances.

TV commercial director Erik Matti’s “The Arrival” also got five major nominations, including Best Film, Best Direction and Best Screenplay.
McCann Erickson veteran Tessie Tomas earned a Best Actress nomination for “Sanglaan”.

Outside of advertising, 2009 Venice Film Festival Best Film winner Pepe Diokno, and his movie “Engkwentro” (Encounter), also has a number of nominations, including Best Film and Best Director.
