Campaign Spotlight: Inspired by real life, “Lolo Daddy” lives on in TikTok’s Christmas spot by Ace Saatchi & Saatchi

MANILA, PHILIPPINES — TikTok, the popular social media app, is famous in the Philippines for its content featuring singing, dancing, and quirky challenges. So when it decided to do a Christmas spot, it wanted to go beyond the expected and create a story that’s both authentic and poignant.

That’s why in TikTok’s newest campaign video, “Lolo Daddy”, the Ace Saatchi team took inspiration from the late grandfather of one of the copywriters.

The team modeled the main character after Eduardo “Didi” Casimiro (1928-2020) who loved Christmas. Every year, he would set up his belen just as it had been all the years before. He would sing and pat his lap to the rhythm of any Christmas song that played. It is these small moments that the family will miss the most this Christmas.

Many Filipinos were faced with their own unexpected losses in 2020. People who have not just lost a loved one, but all the small moments they’ve grown to love as well. For them, the upcoming holidays will be far from complete.

Taking a cue from this truth, the team came together to create a Christmas spot dedicated to the loved ones who have passed on and the families who continue to miss them. Because, despite all that we have endured, TikTok still believes that nothing can get in the way of family moments this Christmas.

Since its release, “Lolo Daddy” has garnered many heartfelt replies that echo similar stories of love and loss. With its real life inspiration and genuine storytelling, “Lolo Daddy” is able to embody the personal yet universal experience of losing a loved one, especially in 2020.

Ultimately, “Lolo Daddy” is a story that reminds us that, no matter who we have lost this year, we can still celebrate Christmas with the small moments we have captured and the good memories we have shared along the way.
