Is Alex Bogusky the real Cornelius Trunchpole?

GLOBAL, SEPTEMBER 14, 2010 – It is the question admen have been trying to answer for months: who is Cornelius Trunchpole? Surely no such man exists in the industry, but anything is possible online. The self-proclaimed “English advertising legend of the 1930’s, 40’s, 50’s and 60’s” and “long forgotten giant of the ad world” has found a following on Facebook, Twitter and a blog since April.

Steve Hall of the blog Adrants has made a second guess, after proposing that Trunchpole is former Saatchi & Saatchi CCO Gerry Graf, which Trunchpole subsequently refuted. A second-hand source has tipped off that Trunchpole is none other than Alex Bogusky, who retired from advertising in July.

It would not be a stretch. Bogusky, like the clever senior citizen, is into social media and causes—Trunchpole has started work on a Habitat For Humanity campaign. But so are many people in advertising. If Hall is wrong, who the real Trunchpole is can be anyone’s guess. We wish him a longer, more productive life.
