London International Awards 2011: Asian finalists show strength in Print and Poster

GLOBAL – OCTOBER 6, 2011: Nine Asian are countries represented in the shortlist, led by Thailand with 21, Japan with 14, China with 13 and Malaysia with 12. Singapore, the Philippines, India, Hong Kong and Indonesia round out the region’s finalists out of the 528 shortlisted in the 11 categories

 

The Bangkok agencies dominated Print and Poster. Hakuhodo Asia Pacific/Spicy H’s IT Works/Time Works campaign brought in two campaign and eight single finalists in the two categories. Creative JuiceBangkok’s work for M Wrap garnered five noms in total, two for the campaign in Print and Poster, and two for the “Chicken” ad in Print and Poster and one for the “Pork” ad. Euro RSCG Bangkok picked up four finalists, one each for its “Frog” and “Chameleon” ads for  Shieldtox Naturgard in both Print and Poster. The last two finalists come from Y&R Thailand for its “Pet, Bully, Asteroid, Killer Bees” campaign in Radio for Ichitan Double Drink and Leo Burnett Thailand for the TMB Corporate Branding spot "Panyee FC". 

 

Nine agencies shared the Japanese shortlist, headed by Dentsu Tokyo, which brought in one finalist each in three categories: “UNIQLO Lucky Line” in Digital, “The 250km Wave” for Kyushu Shinkansen in Integrated, and the “iSiD Recruit 2012” campaign in Design. The agency’s Kansai office pulled one in Design for “The Ultra Asian” campaign. Aoi Advertising’s “SOUR Mirror” was shortlisted in Digital and the New category; Tokyu Agency is twice a finalist in Digital for “Japan World Cup” and in Design for “Graphic Explanation”; as is Ogilvy & Mather Tokyo, a finalist for “Dog Poop Insurance” for Sneaker Freaker magazine in the New category and “Chemical Reaction Corporate Stationery” for Shu’s Corporate Tool  in Design. Daiko Advertising, Taiyo Kikaku, ADK Tokyo and Eight Branding Design are finalists in Radio, Digital, Packaging Design and Design categories, respectively.

 

JWT Shanghai lit the path for China with five finalists, two in Non Traditional and in the New category for its “The Skate Wash” for Metersbonwe and four for its Samsonite “Heaven and Hell”–three in Print and one in Poster. Three pieces from DDB China Group made the cut: “ Chopsticks, Not Chop-trees” and “Walk for Green” for  China Environmental Protection Foundation in Non Traditional and “D.I.Y Street Basketball” for Gatorade in the New category.  Proximity China, Beijing and Goodstein & Partners reeled in mentions in Digital, Design and the New category for the Volkswagen “The People’s Car Project”. Ogilvy Shanghai produced one finalist, also for the New category, “Delay the Work Day” for 361.

 

Ogilvy Malaysia was honored with ten mentions in total, two in Print for Panadol Extra “Traffic Blues” and eight for Pictionary in Print and Poster. Adding to the Malaysia tally are McCann Erickson Malaysia’s Perspectives campaign for The New Straits Times in Print and Bates 141 Malaysia’s “Rewind” anti-speeding awareness commercial in Radio.

 

DDB Singapore took half of the island-state’s eight finalists. It’s “Pimple, Big Bottom and Bad Hair Day” ad campaign was shortlisted in Print and Poster. It also merited Design finalists for Starhub Online Music Store “Musical Fitting Room” and its work for ACRES. The remaining Singapore finalists are all for Samroc Radio ads: one for the entire campaign with Lowe Singapore as entrant and one each to Lowe Singapore and The Gunnery for “Awesome Light”.

 

BBDO Guerrero/Proximity Philippines’ Saridon campaign captured the jury’s fancy thrice: “Hammer” in TV/Cinema/Online Film and the “Butcher, Carpenter, Laundry” campaign in Print and Billboard. Campaigns & Grey’s “Louis” for Dulcolax and Ace Saatchi & Saatchi’s “Text ECG” earned the thumb up in Radio, while DDB Philippines’ “Vase, Plate, Bowl” campaign for Monami was cited in Design. India did well in TV/Cinema/Online Film with three finalists: one each to Ogilvy & Mather” and to Nirvana Films for the “Train” spot for Indian Railways, and again to Nirvana Films for “"Your Moment is Waiting" for Kerala Tourism. In the New category, Contract Advertising lassoed a mention withits work for JK Tyre, “Soles With Souls”.

 

Leo Burnett Hong Kong captured three spots in the shortlist, all for its “Parallel Consequences” campaign for Greenpeace”, two in Print and one in Poster. DDB Group, Hong Kong contributed a finalist for McDonald’s “Lucky Red Packets”.

 

Ogilvy Indonesia secured three Print nods: Feminax “Secretary”, Feminax “Housewife” and JALA PRT “Mop”.
