PHILIPPINES, OCTOBER 26, 2010 – Blind Field: Photography and Place, Wawi Navarroza’s curatorial debut, brings together the works of 14 contemporary artists working with photography (locally and abroad) who engage in ideas of "Place" around or beyond the traditional use of the medium: Yason Banal, Ringo Bunoan, Bea Camacho, Jed Escueta, Thomas Kellner, Jet Melencio, Renan Ortiz, Beatrix Pang + Peter Piller + Sushan Chan, Rachel Rillo, Gerardo Tan, Maria Taniguchi, and MM Yu.

The works draw attention to three details: where the photograph was taken, where it is placed, and where it will take you.

The group show moves away from the passive appreciation of hung photographs into a more direct engagement with the viewer who is physically compelled to move about and encounter the work as ‘sites’. The gallery space, the blind field of the title is activated as a "cultivated habitation".

The exhibit is complemented by three gallery events:
-A film screening on Thursday, November 4 at 3pm, to be introduced by Yason Banal, head of the UPFI Film Center. Films to be screened are La Jetée by Chris Marker, Last Year at Marienbad by Alain Resnais, and Empire by Andy Warhol.

-Walk and Talk: a gallery tour with the artists on show with an introduction by Wawi Navarroza, curator, on Saturday, November 13, 3pm.

-A lecture with slideshows from guest speakers Arch. Paul Alcazaren and Mark Salvatus on Philippine history and urban planning, November 20, 3pm.

Blind Field runs simultaneously with Wet Paint by Elaine Roberto-Navas, curated by Roberto Chabet in SLab and August
by Maya Muñoz in 20SQUARE until November 20, 2010.
