THE PHILIPPINES, OCTOBER 2011 – Drawing inspiration from his own experiences, Filipino-American Apl.de.Ap (Allan Pineda) of the Black Eyed Peas launched the We Can Be Anything education advocacy campaign, the product of a partnership between the Apl.de.Ap Foundation (AdAF) and the Ninoy and Cory Aquino Foundation.
The eldest of seven siblings and coming from a poor family, Apl.de.Ap knew early in life that going to school could help him have a better future. “I just wanted to have an education,” he shared. “In every Filipino family, the children always want to help the parents – that was my goal.” Through his foundation, he hopes to be able to help improve the education situation in the Philippines. “I am willing to share my talent and time to give back to the community. It is important to give back, and, given the opportunity, I would do the same thing all over again.”
To drive his point home, Apl.de.Ap wrote the song “We Can Be”, around which the We Can Be Anything campaign now revolves. Using his position as the ambassador of education of the iamninoy-iamcory Movement as a platform for his advocacy, the singer-producer also lends his celebrity status to the campaign to attract more supporters for education initiatives in the country.
Proceeds from the campaign will benefit the MyLibrary Program of the Ayala Foundation/Philippine Development Foundation and the Bayanihang Pampaaralan, an initiative of 57-75 Movement, which aims to construct 10,000 classrooms two years, concentrating on areas that require the most help.
The We Can Do Anything Campaign is sponsored by the PLDT Smart Foundation, Meralco Foundation, Philippine Airlines, and the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation.
