Unilever Philippines’ Senior Sustainable Business Manager. Touching up on Unilever’s mission to make sustainable living more commonplace, Torres emphasized the role of innovative thinking in achieving sustainability in a business.
A Brand with a Purpose
Fast moving consumer goods company Unilever has numerous brands under its belt, most of which are staples inside grocery stores. While most of their products use plastic packaging, the brand has made a newfound commitment to make sustainable living more commonplace even in a multinational business that has depended on plastics like theirs.
The company’s goals by 2020 are the following:
Improve the health and well-being of more than one billion people
Reduce its environmental impact by half
And enhance millions of people’s livelihoods
In his talk, Torres breaks down what needs to be done from the side of the consumer down to its collaborators: understanding consumer rights; using better, less, and even no plastic; making sure there’s a sustainable and scalable plastic collection model for their packaging; having a circular conversion model; and building partnerships to create better solutions.
It’s a comfort to know through Torres’ talk that a big company such as Unilever is trying their best to lessen their impact on the environment. Even though most of what they’re doing are only small steps, the fact that they are building up towards the betterment of the environment’s future is important in itself. Because it might be too late if we, and big corporations like Unilever, don’t act now.
