KBP to plant 200K trees in nationwide activity

THE PHILIPPINES, SEPTEMBER 30, 2011: In the aftermath of the devastation brought about by the typhoon Pedring, the country’s broadcasters are turning themselves into environment warriors this weekend with a nationwide, simultaneous tree-planting activity that is expected to put to the ground over 200,000 seedlings as well as raise environmental awareness across the regions.

Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) Chairman Herman Z. Basbaño said the activity, in support of the national government’s greening program and the fight against global warming, is also timely as he recalls that Ondoy, the most devastating flood ever to hit the country, took place two years ago this week.

“We all know that there are many flood-prone areas in the country,” said Basbaño. “We hope that the KBP’s initiative in key cities and provinces will generate a favorable and corresponding action from other sectors across the country.”

Nearly 30 KBP chapters in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao are spearheading the activity in coordination with the various local government units as well as environment and natural resources offices. The project – dubbed Oplan Broadcastreeing, is being undertaken in partnership with the Departments of Interior and Local Government and Environment and Natural Resources and other KBP friends.

The simultaneous, nationwide activity is “a first for the KBP” and inspired by the success of the KBP led tree-planting activity in Cagayan de Oro and Iloilo a couple of years ago.”

Assembly for Oplan Broadcastreeing will be at 5:30am, October 1, 2011 in all participating participating areas.  For National Capital Region it will be at the parking area of  Robinson’s East, Marcos Highway, Cainta City.  Planting site is in Barangay San Andres, Tanay, Rizal.
