Manila FAME puts Filipino craftsmanship on the world stage

MANILA – October 18, 2013 – Filipino artists and artisans get their share of the spotlight once again with the opening of the 58th edition of Manila FAME, the design expo that offers high-quality export products in furniture, furnishings, decor, and fashion.

The event opened on October 17, and will run until October 20.
 
According to Rosvi Gaetos, executive director of Manila FAME lead organizer  CITEM (Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions), the event is meant to push the Philippines as the top-of-mind sourcing destination and the region’s creative hub.
 
"Showcasing Philippine craftsmanship has always been the foundation of Manila FAME, it has always sparked global interest because of the innate talent and ingenuity of the Filipino craftsmen," Gaetos said.
 
The event is a visual spectacle, displaying the works of local designers and brands such as Kenneth Cobonpue, Ito Kish, Betis Crafts, Resurrection Furniture and Found Objects Gallery, More than a Chair, and Prado Filipino Artisans.
 
More than this, the event also shines the spotlight on Filipino craft techniques, particularly weaving. "Neotextiles Philippines," for instance, exhibits contemporary Philippine textiles crafted from sustainable fibers by local weaving communities, and "Craft Spots" is a live demonstration of the transformation of abaca fiber through age-old techniques by Filipino artisans.
 
Another event highlight, "Top Brands in Motion," is a show feature that focuses on Filipino retail brands that are ready for the overseas markets.
 
"In this edition of Manila FAME, I am trying to bring these local companies to a new stage of exposure and branding as well as pitching in new ideas on how they can open up and offer their products to a bigger market," Manila FAME creative director Budji Layug said.
 
He added, "I hope that by giving my thoughts and sharing my experiences, they will be able to understand better and think ahead in terms of being design-forward without compromising the quality of their products."
